Trustees Annual Report:  From April 2009, the trustees of charities will need to expand the content of their Trustees Annual Report in their annual accounts. This will apply to all annual accounts for the financial year ending on or after 31 March 2009. Currently they are required to explain their activities and achievements in relation to their objects but from April 2009 they will need to include a statement showing how their aims are for public benefit and have been carried out in such a manner.

Pensions:  In 2012, there is going to be the introduction of compulsory pension contributions for both employees and employers.  When the personal accounts regulations come into force, employers will have to enrol employees in a personal account, or put the employee into an existing plan. Charities that do not operate a pension scheme at present need to budget for the increased costs, likewise those who already have a scheme in place will see an increase in demand for pensions.  Employers will need to ensure that they have appropriate administration and communication processes in place to deal with auto-enrolment.

Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIO):  There is still uncertainty as to when this new legal form of incorporation for charities will be available. The Charity Commission and the Office of the Third Sector are considering the responses from a consultation exercise, which closed in December 2008, and a report should be available shortly, which will detail the results. The present indications are late 2009/early 2010 for this form to become available.

If you have any queries or need support on any aspects of your accounting please do not hesitate to contact Sian Broughton, Community Accountant for East Riding Voluntary Action Services (ERVAS) Limited.

Does your group need support with their finances?

Whether you are a new group or a well established group, we can help with the following:

Annual Accounts Preparation
We can prepare your annual accounts in a way that complies with required legislation.

Independent Examination of Accounts
We can act as Independent Examiners for your charity or charitable company – there have been some recent developments with regards the Charities Act 2006 and the Companies Act 2006 which enables both charities and charitable companies with income under £500,000 to have an Independent Examination rather than a full statutory audit for all accounting periods starting 01 April 2008.  For accounting periods starting prior to this there are different rules but contact us and we will discuss your requirements.

Training
As well as running group training sessions we also offer one-to-one training and support tailored to your group.

General financial advice
We are available via e-mail or telephone to answer any finance related queries that you may have – no query is too small.  If we don’t know the answer we will either find out or sign-post you to someone who does.

Financial Health Check of your organisation
We can give an in-depth review of all of your financial systems and report back to you on the strengths and weaknesses of your group.  We will also suggest ways that you can improve the systems and give support as required to enable you to do this.

Payroll service
We offer a comprehensive payroll facility that is efficient, easy to use and is a cost effective solution to the payroll needs of charities, voluntary organisations and community groups in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Bookkeeping services
Although we would prefer to empower organisations to enable them to manage their own accounts we are aware that sometimes it is not always possible -you may not have the capacity to do this effectively or an employee who covered this role has left.  Therefore, we are
offering a bookkeeping service in which we come to your organisation as required to maintain your accounts.

Good Practice Guides
We have a set of good practice guides available free of charge which cover many aspects of running your organisation.  These are available by e-mail or hard copy.

Budget Preparation and/or Cash Flow Preparation
Do you need to prepare a budget or cash flow statement for your entire organisation or for a particular funding bid and not sure where to start.  We can give you advice and support on this.

Listed are just a few of the services that we can offer your organisation, if you require something different please do not hesitate to contact us.

Whatever services we can offer your group we will do so in a friendly and professional manner.  From experience we are aware that
sometimes you may just need the reassurance that you are doing it right or that you have a small issue that you are not sure how to deal with, we work on the principle that no question is a silly one and no issue is to small for us to work through with you.
